Newsletter | June 2026
After a quieter time here at Bedside Manners due to planned leave, we're hitting the ground running for the second half of 2026 with ongoing research at the University of Sydney and new research at the University of Otago.
Marian Casey has been providing her expertise to develop new online modules and we're planning to release one on telehealth later this year. Marian will also be writing some blog posts for Bedside Manners, so keep an eye out for those. I am preparing for another run of our asynchronous online course on how to do Conversation Analysis for research, which will start on 15 June.
I had the privilege of being a panellist at the NSW Medical Council's connect+learn event focused on "Considering culture" and I continue in my role on the Communicating for Safety Advisory Committee at the Australian Commission for Safety and Quality in Health Care, which met in May.
We're looking forward to once again being able to offer in person workshops for the second half of this year, with plans to offer a wider range including one for people preparing for medical school interviews. Please get in touch if you'd like to discuss options.
Recommendation of the month
The 'State of Talk' podcast offers some wonderful insights into how people approach the methodology of conversation analysis, with interviews with a wide range of researchers with varied academic foci. It's hosted by the International Society for Conversation Analysis and can be found here. I've been trying to figure out what my favourite episode has been so far, but it's a hard choice. So if you're going to start somewhere, start at the beginning with an interview with Australian conversation analyst, Rod Gardner.
ICCA 2026
The International Conference on Conversation Analysis (ICCA) is coming up at the end of this month. This year it's in Edmonton, Canada. I will be presenting on work done with A/Prof Liliana Laranjo and her team at the University of Sydney on frustration with automated speech recognition calls. I'll also be cheering on my PhD student, Irene Simpson, with her presentation on work from the University of New South Wales on factors that influence consultation length in general practice. This is going to be a really interesting conference and I love to post lots of what I learn on social media, so please follow me on Instagram, Bluesky, and LinkedIn.

Earlier this year we had our courses and coaching re-accredited for CPD by AMA CPD Home and ACRRM. We're offering a special discount for newsletter subscribers, with 10% our self-paced modules using the code "newsletter".
